Minesweeper

Many of you are familiar with the little game that comes with Windows called minesweeper. Its a very conceptually simple game that has stolen many hours of my life. It would be interesting if the minesweeper program had counters for how quickly you can solve the games, but also how long you have played the game total. That might be frightening.

One thing I love about the game is the depth that arises out of the simple rules. By analyzing the situation and considering possibilities, you can learn a lot more about the location of the mines. And you don't need to be taught, the patterns are just there for you to learn.

I find it very amusing that any business with a serious IT branch removes these time-sink type of games from the computer.

Here is a funny trailer video for a fictional mine-sweeper movie: http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1770138

Also, the Wikipedia entry is a good read too.

"The patterns are just there" ... BUT you have an amazing mind for patterns. I don't play computer games, so I don't know for myself, but I wonder if the patterns are obvious to everyone.
