A name by any other name is something I call you

So, whats the deal with names? Why have 'em? I guess you would start by pointing out that we need a simple way to differentiate between people. If I told my crew in the morning: You clean the walls, you clean the floor, you empty trash, and you help the other you with the stuff. It might get confusing. Especially when you asks me what you's doing. So thats the very basic level, to make a simple way to refer to different things.

But names pick up much more meaning as we use them. At work, I can say 'Jay wants this done.' and it carries a lot of weight. When Jay gets involved in something, it either gets done, or Jay gets in your face. So people start to associate the name with the attributes of the person. Ever used a phrase similar to "don't pull an Isaac?" Some well known action has become very well associated with the person. In Isaac, its his tendency to forgot to lock his computer. Its a bad trait for the Human Resources Manager to have.

So names specify an individual, and carry the attributes of their owner. What else? I would say names communicate information. I think the middle name is a great place to start. I would hazard the notion that the middle name exists for two reasons: 1) Greatly increase the uniqueness of the identifier, and 2) Lets you know when you are really in trouble with Mom, al la "Erin HEATHER Hoffman!" So the name carries a message with it when used, and people can choose from a variety of names to give the message they want. Take couples, they use endearments, or pet names for each other. This is a name that is almost exclusive to the relationship, and carries the message of love that they share.

There is a lot to a name, take a moment to appreciate yours & what it means for you.
